  • Understanding Velocity: Speed vs. Direction
Velocity is a measure of both speed and its direction.

    Here's why:

    * Speed tells you how fast something is moving.

    * Direction tells you which way it's moving.

So, to fully describe the motion of an object, you need both its speed and direction. This combined information is what we call velocity.

    For example:

    * A car traveling at 60 mph north has a different velocity than a car traveling at 60 mph south. Even though their speeds are the same, their directions are different.
