    In a transverse wave, the particles vibrate perpendicular to the direction the wave travels.

    Think of a wave on a string. The wave travels horizontally, but the string itself moves up and down (vertically). That up-and-down motion is the vibration, and it's perpendicular to the direction the wave is moving.
