Understanding Specific Gravity
Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance. The reference substance for solids and liquids is usually water at 4°C.
Calculations
1. Density of the Metal:
* Density = Mass / Volume
* Density = 200 g / 40 cm³
* Density = 5 g/cm³
2. Density of Water:
* The density of water at 4°C is approximately 1 g/cm³
3. Specific Gravity:
* Specific Gravity = Density of Metal / Density of Water
* Specific Gravity = 5 g/cm³ / 1 g/cm³
* Specific Gravity = 5
Therefore, the specific gravity of the metal is 5.
