  • Understanding Friction: The Force Opposing Motion
The force that opposes the motion of one object moving past another is called friction.

There are different types of friction, but they all arise from the interaction between the surfaces of the two objects:

    * Static friction: This force prevents an object from moving when a force is applied to it. It's the friction that keeps a book on a table from sliding off.

    * Kinetic friction: This force opposes the motion of an object that is already moving. It's the friction that slows down a car that's braking.

    * Rolling friction: This force occurs when a round object rolls over a surface. It's the friction that slows down a bicycle's wheel.

    * Fluid friction: This force occurs when an object moves through a fluid, such as air or water. It's the friction that slows down a plane in flight.

Friction is a very important force in our everyday lives. It allows us to walk, drive cars, and play sports. It also causes wear and tear on machines and other objects.
