The speed of sound varies depending on the medium it travels through. In air at sea level and room temperature, the speed of sound is approximately 767 mph (1,235 km/h).
There's no single speed that defines supersonic travel. Instead, we use Mach numbers to describe the speed of objects relative to the speed of sound:
* Mach 1 is the speed of sound.
* Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound.
* Mach 3 is three times the speed of sound, and so on.
So, an object traveling at Mach 2 is supersonic, as is an object traveling at Mach 5 or Mach 10.
