  • Understanding Velocity: The 3 Key Components
You need three things to describe the velocity of an object:

    1. Speed: This tells you how fast the object is moving. It's the magnitude of the velocity.

    2. Direction: This tells you which way the object is moving.

    3. Reference Point: This is a fixed location that you use to determine the object's position relative to. Without a reference point, you can't determine if the object is moving or not.

For example, to describe the velocity of a car, you would say something like "The car is traveling at 60 miles per hour towards the north relative to the town square."
