  • Wave Refraction: Understanding Bending of Waves
The change in direction of a wave going from one medium to another is called refraction.

    Here's why:

    * Refraction occurs because the speed of a wave changes when it moves from one medium to another. This change in speed causes the wave to bend, changing its direction.

    * The amount of bending depends on the angle at which the wave hits the boundary between the two media and the difference in the speed of the wave in the two media.

Here are some examples of refraction:

    * Light bending as it goes from air to water. This is why a straw in a glass of water appears to be bent at the surface.

    * Sound waves bending as they go from air to a wall. This is why you can hear sounds around corners even if you can't see the source.
