    The backwards and forwards motion of particles in a solid is called vibration.

    While particles in a solid are fixed in a rigid structure, they still have kinetic energy and vibrate around their fixed positions. This vibration is what gives solids their characteristic properties, such as their resistance to compression and their ability to transmit sound waves.
