  • Understanding Thrust: How Airplanes Generate Forward Motion
The force that propels an airplane forward is called thrust.

    Here's how it works:

    * Engines: Airplanes use engines (either jet or propeller) to create thrust.

    * Jet Engines: Jet engines suck in air, compress it, burn fuel to heat it, and then expel the hot, expanding air out the back. This expulsion of hot air creates thrust.

    * Propeller Engines: Propeller engines use a rotating propeller to push air backward, which in turn propels the airplane forward.

    Think of it like this:

If you blow air out of a balloon, the balloon will move in the opposite direction of the air you blew out. An airplane's engine does the same thing, only on a much larger scale.
