Both light and sound can travel through matter, but in different ways:

* Light can travel through both matter and empty space (a vacuum). It does this by oscillating electric and magnetic fields.

* Sound needs a medium (matter) to travel. It travels by causing vibrations in the molecules of the medium.

So, while both can travel through matter, only light can travel through empty space.
