  • Understanding Friction: The Force That Opposes Sliding
The force that opposes the sliding of two surfaces in contact with each other is called friction.

There are two main types of friction:

    * Static friction: This acts when the surfaces are at rest relative to each other. It prevents the objects from starting to move.

    * Kinetic friction: This acts when the surfaces are moving relative to each other. It opposes the motion and tries to slow it down.

Friction is caused by the microscopic irregularities on the surfaces of the objects. These irregularities interlock, creating resistance to movement. The amount of friction depends on several factors, including the materials of the surfaces, the roughness of the surfaces, and the force pressing them together.
