He formulated his laws of motion in his book "Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica" (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) published in 1687. The first of these laws, often called the Law of Inertia, states that:

* An object at rest will remain at rest, and an object in motion will remain in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
