Understanding Average Speed

Average speed isn't simply the average of all the speeds you traveled at. It's calculated by considering the total distance traveled and the total time taken.

Formula

Average Speed = (Total Distance) / (Total Time)

Example

Let's say you drive:

* 50 miles at 60 mph for 1 hour

* 30 miles at 40 mph for 45 minutes (0.75 hours)

1. Calculate the total distance: 50 miles + 30 miles = 80 miles

2. Calculate the total time: 1 hour + 0.75 hours = 1.75 hours

3. Divide the total distance by the total time: 80 miles / 1.75 hours = 45.71 mph (approximately)

Important Note:

* Units: Make sure your units are consistent (e.g., miles and hours, kilometers and minutes).

* Constant Speed vs. Variable Speed: This formula works for both constant speed (traveling at the same speed throughout) and variable speed (changing speeds).
