  • Wave Speed Changes: Understanding Transmission Through Different Media
    Waves change speed when they travel from one medium to another due to the following reasons:

    1. Change in the medium's properties:

    * Density: The density of a medium affects how easily waves can propagate through it. Denser mediums resist wave motion more, causing the wave to slow down. For example, sound travels slower in water than in air because water is denser.

    * Elasticity: The elasticity of a medium determines how readily it can deform and restore its shape. More elastic mediums allow waves to travel faster, as they spring back more quickly after being disturbed. For example, sound travels faster in steel than in rubber because steel is more elastic.

    * Other properties: Other factors can also influence wave speed, such as temperature (sound travels faster in warmer air) or the presence of impurities.

    2. Conservation of Energy:

    * When a wave enters a new medium, its frequency remains constant. The frequency is determined by the source of the wave and does not change as the wave travels. However, the speed of the wave changes. To maintain the conservation of energy, the wavelength of the wave must also change.

    * In a denser medium, the wave slows down, causing its wavelength to decrease. Conversely, in a less dense medium, the wave speeds up and its wavelength increases.

    3. Refraction:

    * When waves travel from one medium to another at an angle, they change direction as well as speed. This bending of the wave is called refraction. The amount of refraction depends on the difference in wave speed between the two mediums.

    In summary:

    The change in wave speed when travelling from one medium to another is primarily due to the differences in the physical properties of the mediums, particularly their density and elasticity. This change in speed, combined with the conservation of energy, necessitates a change in wavelength. In some cases, this also leads to a change in direction, known as refraction.
