  • Newton's First Law: Understanding Balanced Forces and Inertia
If an object is at rest, all forces acting on it must be balanced.

    Here's why:

    * Newton's First Law of Motion: This law states that an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by a net force.

    * Net Force: The net force is the sum of all forces acting on an object.

    * Balanced Forces: When forces are balanced, their vector sum equals zero. This means that there is no net force acting on the object, and it will remain at rest.

Example: Imagine a book sitting on a table. Gravity pulls the book downwards, but the table pushes back upwards with an equal and opposite force. These forces are balanced, so the book remains at rest.
