  • Henri Becquerel: Discoverer of Radioactivity and its Detection
The physicist who invented the instrument that detects radioactivity is Henri Becquerel.

While he didn't invent the specific instrument we know today as a Geiger counter, Becquerel discovered radioactivity itself in 1896. He used a photographic plate wrapped in black paper to study uranium salts and discovered that the plate was exposed even when it was kept in the dark. This led to the development of instruments to detect and measure radioactivity, including the Geiger counter.
