  • Pressure in Liquids: Understanding Direction and Depth
Liquid material exerts pressure in all directions.

This is a key characteristic of fluids (liquids and gases):

    * Pressure is independent of direction: Pressure exerted by a liquid acts equally in all directions at a given depth.

    * Pressure increases with depth: The deeper you go into a liquid, the greater the pressure.

This is why a scuba diver feels more pressure at greater depths, and why a dam needs to be stronger at the bottom than at the top.
