  • Understanding Velocity: Speed and Direction Explained
You need two pieces of information to determine the velocity of an object:

    1. Speed: This tells you how fast the object is moving.

    2. Direction: This tells you the path the object is traveling along.

Velocity is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude (speed) and direction.

    For example:

    * "The car is traveling at 60 miles per hour" only tells us the speed.

    * "The car is traveling at 60 miles per hour eastbound" tells us both the speed and the direction, therefore giving us the velocity.
