  • Hydrometer: How to Measure Liquid Specific Gravity - Definition & Usage
The instrument used to measure the specific gravity of a liquid is called a hydrometer.

    Here's how it works:

    * Hydrometer Design: A hydrometer is a sealed glass tube with a weighted bulb at the bottom and a graduated stem at the top.

    * Principle of Floatation: The hydrometer floats in the liquid, and the depth to which it sinks indicates the liquid's specific gravity.

    * Specific Gravity Measurement: The scale on the stem is calibrated to directly read the specific gravity of the liquid. A higher specific gravity means the liquid is denser and the hydrometer will sink less.

Note: There are different types of hydrometers designed for specific liquids (e.g., battery acid hydrometer, wine hydrometer).
