  • J.J. Thomson and the Discovery of the Electron's e/m Ratio
The charge to mass ratio (e/m) for electrons was discovered by J.J. Thomson in 1897.

He achieved this through his experiments with cathode rays. His setup involved passing cathode rays through a magnetic field and an electric field. By carefully measuring the deflection of the rays in each field, Thomson was able to calculate the ratio of the charge to mass of the particles that make up the cathode rays.
