  • Understanding Gases: The State of Matter Without a Fixed Volume
The state of matter that has no definite volume is gas.

    Here's why:

    * Gases are made up of particles that are widely spaced and move freely. They have no fixed shape and will expand to fill whatever container they are in.

    * Liquids have a definite volume but no fixed shape. They will take the shape of their container but maintain their volume.

    * Solids have a definite volume and a fixed shape. Their particles are closely packed together.
