  • Blown Film Process: Why Upward Extrusion?
    The blown film process is typically carried out with the film being extruded vertically upwards for a few key reasons:

    * Gravity Assist: The upward direction allows gravity to assist in pulling the molten plastic through the die and up the bubble. This helps to maintain a consistent film thickness and reduces the need for high extrusion pressures.

    * Bubble Stability: The upward direction promotes a more stable bubble. The air inside the bubble is naturally buoyant and wants to rise, which helps to keep the bubble from collapsing.

    * Film Cooling: As the bubble rises, it encounters cooler air, which helps to cool and solidify the film. This is essential for creating a strong and durable film.

    * Easier Handling: A vertically extruded film is easier to handle and transport as it can be wound onto a roll directly from the bubble.

    * Reduced Material Waste: By keeping the film in an upward direction, there is less chance of it sagging or touching the production floor, minimizing waste.

    While upward extrusion is the most common method, there are some applications where horizontal or even downward extrusion might be used. However, the majority of blown film production relies on the vertical orientation due to the benefits listed above.
