  • Liquids: Understanding Shape and Volume Changes
The type of matter that can change shape and volume is liquids. Here's why:

    * Shape: Liquids take the shape of their container. Pour water into a glass, and it becomes the shape of the glass. Pour it into a bowl, and it takes the shape of the bowl.

    * Volume: While the shape changes, the volume of the liquid remains constant. A gallon of water is still a gallon of water, no matter what container it's in.

    Other states of matter:

    * Solids: Solids have a definite shape and volume. A rock will stay the same shape and size unless acted upon by an outside force.

    * Gases: Gases have no definite shape or volume. They expand to fill the entire container they are in.
