    The two general shapes of intrusive igneous bodies are:

    * Discordant: These bodies cut across the existing rock layers (strata). Examples include dikes, which are tabular bodies that cut vertically, and sills, which are tabular bodies that intrude horizontally between layers.

    * Concordant: These bodies are parallel to the existing rock layers. Examples include laccoliths, which are dome-shaped intrusions that arch the overlying rock layers, and lopoliths, which are saucer-shaped intrusions that sink into the underlying rock layers.
