  • Anemometers: Understanding Wind Speed and Direction Measurement
The instrument that measures wind speed and direction is called an anemometer.

There are different types of anemometers, but they all work on the principle of measuring the force or speed of the wind.

    * Cup anemometers: These are the most common type and consist of three or four cups that rotate in the wind. The speed of rotation is proportional to the wind speed.

    * Propeller anemometers: These have a propeller that spins in the wind, similar to a wind turbine.

    * Sonic anemometers: These use sound waves to measure wind speed and direction.

    * Hot-wire anemometers: These measure the cooling effect of the wind on a heated wire.

Many anemometers also include a wind vane, which is a device that points into the wind to indicate the wind direction.
