  • Sound Waves and Empty Space: Why Sound Needs a Medium
The wave that cannot travel through empty space is sound.

    Here's why:

    * Sound waves are mechanical waves: This means they need a medium (like air, water, or solids) to travel. They do this by vibrating the particles of the medium.

    * Empty space has no particles: Since there's nothing for sound waves to vibrate, they cannot propagate through a vacuum.

Other types of waves, like light waves (electromagnetic waves), can travel through the vacuum of space.
