    The moment magnitude scale was invented by Hiroo Kanamori and Thomas C. Hanks in the 1970s.

    They developed this scale as an improvement upon the Richter magnitude scale, which was known to underestimate the magnitude of large earthquakes. The moment magnitude scale provides a more accurate measure of the total energy released by an earthquake, taking into account the size of the rupture area, the amount of slip on the fault, and the rigidity of the rocks.
