  • Surface Waves: Types, Examples & How They Work
The type of wave that travels only along a surface is called a surface wave.

Here are some examples of surface waves:

    * Water waves: These are the most common example of surface waves. They travel along the interface between water and air.

    * Seismic surface waves: These waves travel along the Earth's surface during earthquakes. They are responsible for much of the damage caused by earthquakes. There are two main types:

    * Love waves: These waves are transverse waves that cause the ground to move horizontally.

    * Rayleigh waves: These waves are a combination of longitudinal and transverse motion, causing the ground to move in a rolling motion.

    * Sound waves on a string: When you pluck a string on a musical instrument, the wave that travels along the string is a surface wave.

Surface waves are distinct from bulk waves, which travel through the interior of a medium. Examples of bulk waves include sound waves traveling through air and light waves traveling through space.
