  • Meteorites, Bolides & Impact Craters: Understanding Space Debris on Earth
There are a few names for an object from space that has hit the surface of a planet or moon:

    * Meteorite: This is the most common and general term for any piece of space debris that survives its passage through the atmosphere and reaches the ground.

    * Bolide: This refers to a very bright meteor, often with a fiery trail, that explodes in the atmosphere. While not technically a "hit" on the surface, the bolide's impact can cause significant damage.

    * Impact crater: This refers to the depression left on the surface by the impact of an object from space. While it doesn't describe the object itself, it's evidence of a past impact.

So, depending on what aspect of the event you're interested in, you can use one of these terms.
