Density refers to the mass per unit of volume of a substance. It is an important term when comparing the buoyancy characteristics of various compounds. For example, if a substance is less dense than water then it will be able to float on the surface of water. Density is used in many chemical calculations and sometimes you will have to find out the average density of multiple compounds.
Calculate the densities of the various substances. Simply divide the mass of the substance by the volume of fluid. Your resulting answer will be displayed in units of the mass over volume. Record and write down each density because you will use it to find the average.
Add up the densities of the substances. Make sure that the units of each density are the same. For example, if the density of one object is in grams over liters, make sure that the other objects are also in grams over liters.
Divide the sum density by the number of objects in question. For example, if there were five objects, then divide your sum density by five. This will give you the overall average of the densities.
