  • Understanding Solids: Shape and Volume Properties
There is no state of matter that has a fixed shape but not a fixed volume.

    Here's why:

    * Solids have both a fixed shape and a fixed volume.

    * Liquids have a fixed volume but not a fixed shape. They take the shape of their container.

    * Gases have neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume. They expand to fill their container.

The properties of fixed shape and fixed volume are interconnected. If something is fixed in one dimension, it's likely to be fixed in the other as well.
