  • Heat Transfer: Understanding Conduction, Convection & Radiation
The passing of heat through a material is called heat transfer.

There are three main modes of heat transfer:

    * Conduction: Heat transfer through direct contact between molecules. This is how a metal spoon heats up when placed in hot soup.

    * Convection: Heat transfer through the movement of fluids (liquids or gases). This is how a radiator warms a room.

    * Radiation: Heat transfer through electromagnetic waves. This is how the sun warms the Earth.

So, while "heat transfer" is the general term, the specific mode of heat transfer depends on the method.
