  • Contact Forces: Understanding Forces Requiring Physical Contact
The only force that requires contact and cannot act at a distance is the contact force.

    Here's why:

    * Contact forces occur when two objects physically touch. Examples include:

    * Normal force: The force that supports an object against gravity.

    * Friction: The force that opposes motion between surfaces in contact.

    * Tension: The force transmitted through a rope, string, or cable when pulled.

    * Applied force: A force applied directly to an object.

    * Non-contact forces act on objects without direct contact. Examples include:

    * Gravitational force: The force of attraction between objects with mass.

    * Electromagnetic force: The force between charged particles, which includes electric and magnetic forces.

    * Strong nuclear force: The force that holds protons and neutrons together in the nucleus of an atom.

    * Weak nuclear force: The force responsible for radioactive decay.
