  • Wave Propagation: Understanding Mediums & Wave Types
The material through which a wave travels is called the medium.

    Here's a breakdown:

    * Mechanical Waves: These waves require a medium to travel. Examples include sound waves (traveling through air, water, solids), water waves (traveling through water), and seismic waves (traveling through the Earth).

    * Electromagnetic Waves: These waves do not require a medium to travel. They can travel through a vacuum, like space. Examples include light waves, radio waves, microwaves, and X-rays.

Important note: While electromagnetic waves can travel through a vacuum, they can also travel through matter. For example, light waves travel through glass, water, and air.
