There are actually five Lagrange points (L1-L5) in the Sun-Earth system, all representing points of gravitational equilibrium where the combined gravitational pull of the Sun and Earth balance out the centrifugal force of an object orbiting the Sun.
L1 is particularly interesting because it is a relatively stable point that's closer to the Earth than the Sun. This makes it a good location for spacecraft, as it allows them to remain relatively stationary with respect to the Earth.
