  • Solids: Understanding Volume and Shape - A Comprehensive Guide
A solid has both volume and shape. Here's why:

    * Volume: Volume refers to the amount of space a substance occupies. Solids have a definite volume because their particles are tightly packed together in a fixed arrangement. They resist compression, meaning you can't easily squeeze them into a smaller space.

    * Shape: Solids have a definite shape because their particles are held in a rigid structure. They maintain their shape even when moved or placed in different containers. Unlike liquids, which take the shape of their container, solids resist changes to their shape.

    Example:

Think of a block of wood. It has a fixed amount of space it takes up (volume), and it maintains its rectangular shape even if you turn it or move it.
