  • Electrons: The Freest Subatomic Particles - Understanding Atomic Structure
The subatomic particle that is free to move is the electron.

    Here's why:

    * Electrons orbit the nucleus of an atom and are held by electrostatic forces. However, these forces are weaker than the forces holding protons and neutrons together in the nucleus.

    * Protons and neutrons are bound together in the nucleus by the strong nuclear force, which is incredibly strong and keeps them tightly confined.

Therefore, electrons have a much higher degree of freedom to move compared to protons and neutrons. This is why electrons are responsible for electrical conductivity, as they can easily move from atom to atom in a material.
