  • Understanding Magnet Poles: Attraction and Repulsion
The two unlike poles on a magnet are the north pole and the south pole.

    Here's why they're called "unlike":

    * Opposite Attract: Unlike poles of magnets attract each other. So a north pole will be drawn towards a south pole.

    * Same Repel: Like poles of magnets repel each other. So a north pole will push away another north pole, and a south pole will push away another south pole.

This fundamental principle of magnetism is what makes magnets so useful for things like compasses and holding objects together.
