  • History's First Living Creature in Space: The V-2 Rocket & Fruit Fly
The first rocket to carry a living thing was V-2 rocket number 13, which launched on June 16, 1942, carrying a fruit fly.

This launch was part of a series of experiments by the German military to test the effects of high-altitude flight on living organisms. The fruit fly was chosen for its small size and relatively simple biology. It was enclosed in a special capsule and was recovered alive after the flight.
