A Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram, named after Ejnar Hertzsprung and Henry Norris Russell, is a scatter plot of stars which shows the relationship between the stars' absolute magnitudes or luminosities versus their stellar classifications or effective temperatures. These diagrams allows astronomers to study stars and understand thier evolutionary stages from the main sequence, to red giants, and to white dwarfs.
