When two plates move toward each other and smash together, it is called a collision. When this happens, one plate usually dives beneath the other, a process called subduction, and is recycled back into the Earth's mantle. This process can cause the formation of mountains if the collision is between two continental plates, or it can cause the formation of volcanoes if the collision is between a continental plate and an oceanic plate.
