The asthenosphere is located in the upper mantle of the Earth, beneath the lithosphere. It is composed of solid rock, but it is under so much pressure from the weight of the lithosphere above it that it behaves like a plastic. This means that it can bend and flow over time, allowing the lithosphere to move around on its surface.
