  • Newton's Third Law of Motion: Action and Reaction Explained
This is an example of Newton's third law of motion.

According to Newton's third law, for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In this case, the action is the force of your weight pushing down on the chair. The reaction is the chair pushing back up on you with an equal amount of force.

This law is also often stated as "To every action there is always opposed an equal reaction."
