A wider rubber band has a greater surface area than a narrower rubber band. When a force is applied to a rubber band, the stress (force per unit area) is lower for a wider rubber band than for a narrower rubber band. This means that the wider rubber band will stretch more than the narrower rubber band under the same force.
In other words, the wider the rubber band, the less tension is needed to stretch it a certain distance.
