Inertia is classified into three main types:
- Inertia of rest:This refers to an object's resistance to change its state of rest. An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an external force.
- Inertia of motion: This refers to an object's resistance to change its state of motion. An object in motion will continue to move with the same velocity and direction unless acted upon by an external force. This concept is often referred to as Newton's first law of motion.
- Rotational inertia: This refers to an object's resistance to change its rotational motion. A rotating object will maintain its angular velocity and direction unless acted upon by an external torque (twisting force). This concept is also known as Newton's second law for rotational motion .
