  • Understanding How Unbalanced Forces Affect Motion: Acceleration, Direction, and Stoppage
Three ways that unbalanced forces can cause an object to change its motion are:

    1. Speed up or slow down. When an unbalanced force is applied to an object, it causes the object to accelerate. This means that the object's speed will either increase or decrease, depending on the direction of the force.

    2. Change direction. An unbalanced force can also cause an object to change direction. This happens when the force is applied at an angle to the object's original path of motion.

    3. Come to a stop. If an unbalanced force is applied in the opposite direction to the object's motion, it will cause the object to decelerate. This means that the object's speed will decrease until it eventually comes to a stop.
