  • Wave Motion and Coastal Erosion: Do Waves Move Water?
Generally, waves do not transport mass in a net forward direction and thus do not move water itself over large distances. They transmit energy. As ocean surfaces encounter a coastline, however, some waves crash on shore where the wave energy ultimately moves sand and other sediment along beaches.
