  • Waves Requiring a Medium: Sound, Water, and Seismic Waves Explained
Three types of waves that require a medium are:

    1. Sound Waves: Sound waves consist of mechanical vibrations in a medium, causing the particles of the medium to vibrate. Without a medium, such as air or water, sound cannot travel.

    2. Water Waves: Water waves occur due to disturbances or vibrations on the surface of water bodies. These waves require water as the medium to propagate and move.

    3. Seismic Waves: Seismic waves, also known as earthquakes waves, travel through the Earth's materials. They consist of various types, including body wave and surface waves. These waves require a solid or liquid medium, such as the Earth's crust or mantle, to propagate.

In contrast, electromagnetic waves, such as light and radio waves, do not require a physical medium to travel and can propagate through vacuum.
