  • Rutherford's Gold Foil Experiment: Understanding Alpha Particle Scattering
The alpha particles that bounce straight back from the gold foil in Rutherford's gold foil experiment have struck the nuclei of atoms. This is because the nucleus is the only part of the atom that is dense enough to cause an alpha particle to bounce straight back. The electrons in an atom are spread out over a much larger volume, so they do not have enough mass to cause an alpha particle to bounce straight back.
