When light hits a new material at an angle, it can be refracted, or bent. This is because the speed of light is different in different materials. When light travels from a faster medium to a slower medium, it bends toward the normal (the line perpendicular to the surface). When light travels from a slower medium to a faster medium, it bends away from the normal.
